1978, Lou came back to Shanghai for surgery.

Before this surgery, he had received three more surgeries, and one of them was extremely dangerous. He left from Nanjing prison, and went to a hospital in Yangzhou, with extreme coldness, 1/3 of his liver was cut. His blanket was organized by a child of his sister-in-law. While he was young, he went through fire and water, when he turned old, he went through thick and thin. Nothing beats him, not the heaven, nor the hell.

It is already unreasonable for a human to be tough like that. He got off the train, there was a storm. “When you turned 70, your life is in danger.”, but he had a straight face, with an umbrella, unyielding.

He had no home to go back to—— his old house was destroyed, even though there were something left, it was meaningless to Lou. The concept of home, was banished decades ago. When he was studying in France, Cheng liked the poems of symbolism, he always carried a work of Rimbaud: which made sense, they were always traveling and always homeless.

Before the anti-right movement, Lou worked shortly in Beijing for a year, he did studies about economics at school, his old job. Cheng remained in Shanghai’s government. They did not spend time missing each other, the new life just started, they were all valuable labor forces. Their last reunion was when Cheng came to Beijing to attend a meeting. Lou took him to the dining hall in school for a meal, they were dressed up, stealing a dumpling from the bowl, he was happy, laughing like a child. It was spring time, a bright future awaits.

And things changed. It was hard to change anything on Lou’s resume, he was a sinner. From that moment, he lost news about Cheng. For years, he wondered if Cheng passed away, but there was no solid evidence to support, he was not desperate yet. He was tortured in prison, worrying about his two younger brothers. He was protective at first, but after learning that Tai died in the south, this became the only hope in his life, the only one and the firmest one. He hoped that Cheng could survive, hope he could hide from people, hope he suffered less——Cheng was the only connection he has with the entire world.

After his arrival in Shanghai, he went to the hospital for check-in, and then he went to the document office, to see Cheng’s situation.

There were young people in the office, they sat him and gave him tea as Lou looked serious. They told him that the documents could not be given away, permissions are necessary.

Lou remembered this building, when he was in Shanghai, it was a famous place. After Hongkong was colonized, many scholars moved to Shanghai, some of them were Lou’s friends. He could not take them home, so he make Cheng rent this place, for the purpose to discuss things. He remembered that Cheng called this place “Liugu Room”, which means running river around the lonely village. Cheng was still young back then, always following him, like the rising sun. The memories are like maze while people turned old, but the person is conscious, Lou knows Cheng is in the memory.

Lou said that he would not touch the documents, he just wanted to ask about someone.

Cheng had an important spot in Trust of Shanghai back then, so it was easy to look for. Lou was invited to an office for a story.

The story was not complete, only for about a year. Cheng went to Beijing in May, 1959 when Lou was already kept and sent to Nanjing, so he had to come back. Circumstances got worse when he returned, his relationship with Lou was solid. In August he was still able to talk in interventions, but in September, the Jeeps drove into Trust of Shanghai, and took him. Later on it was all kinds of searches, every single place, his writings, diaries and his translated poems, were all taken away.

Nobody saw him ever since, maybe he served some sentences, and maybe he was inquired. He was so tough that many brutal ways were used on him, forcing him to write some materials against Lou, but he did not write a single word until he died.

Lou was calm, with glasses and clean tunic suit, after minutes’ silence, he asked:”Did he leave anything?”

After half an hour, the person returned with an envelope, which contained a key. Nothing was in Cheng’s outfit, only this key, but no one knows which box it could open.

Lou asked again, “Do you know where he was buried?” That person only said it might be some public cemetery, but it has been too long ago to find.

Lou appreciated, walked down stairs holding the key, alone. Someone took him to the hospital, he followed, maybe that’s it.

You can never fight against your destiny, he survived through coldness, knives and insults, but he lost his last strength.

The operation was not successful that night, without a word he passed away, like a knife sinks in the sea.

When they were organizing Lou’s legacy, they found the key. Someone recognized it is a key for bank safe, they tried many times and finally found the safe. But there was no money, only a painting, no letters or words in any kind. They were disappointed.

It’s just a painting, normal strokes, terrible layerings and bright colors. There was a house near the forest, like the most common place in thousands of years.
